About

Victor Michael Cruz was born on November 11, 1986, in Paterson, New Jersey. His early life involved attending Paterson Catholic High School, where he excelled in football as a wide receiver and defensive back, earning All-State honors in 2003 with an undefeated team. He continued his academic and athletic career at the University of Massachusetts, completing a BA in Afro-American Studies and becoming a two-time first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association wide receiver in 2008 and 2009. Despite initial academic challenges, Cruz finished his college career fourth all-time at UMass in receptions and fifth in receiving yards.

Cruz began his professional football career after going undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft, subsequently signing with the New York Giants. His rookie preseason in 2010 showcased his potential, leading the NFL in receiving yards and tied for touchdown catches, securing a spot on the Giants’ 53-man roster. The 2011 season proved to be a breakout year, culminating in a Super Bowl XLVI victory against the New England Patriots, where he recorded a touchdown. He became known for his iconic salsa dance celebration after touchdowns, a tribute to his grandmother. In 2011, he notably tied the NFL record with a 99-yard touchdown catch against the New York Jets and set a single-season franchise record for receiving yards with 1,536. His performance earned him Second-team All-Pro honors and the PFWA Most Improved Player award.

Following his Pro Bowl selection in 2012, Cruz signed a five-year contract extension with the Giants in 2013. His career was later impacted by injuries, including a torn patellar tendon in 2014 and a calf injury that sidelined him for the entire 2015 season. He made a comeback in 2016, scoring a game-winning touchdown in his first game back and contributing to the Giants’ postseason run. After being released by the Giants in 2017 and a brief stint with the Chicago Bears, Cruz announced his retirement in 2018. He has since embarked on a career as an ESPN analyst and has engaged in various brand partnerships and community initiatives, including his Victor Cruz Foundation.
