Viktor Hovland was born on September 18, 1997, in Oslo, Norway. He began playing golf at the age of eleven, influenced by his father. At 16, in 2014, Hovland won the Norwegian Amateur Golf Championship. From 2016 to 2019, he played college golf at Oklahoma State University. In 2018, he won the U.S. Amateur, becoming the first Norwegian to do so, which earned him invitations to major tournaments. He finished tied for 13th at the 2018 Emirates Australian Open as an amateur. In 2019, Hovland became the low amateur in the Masters Tournament, finishing tied for 32nd. This performance propelled him to the number one spot in the World Amateur Golf Ranking. The same year, he set a U.S. Open record for the lowest 72-hole score by an amateur, finishing 12th. He also became the first player since 1998 to win low amateur honors at both the Masters and U.S. Open in the same season. In 2019, he received the Ben Hogan Award as the best college player in the United States.
Hovland turned professional following the 2019 U.S. Open, making his debut at the Travelers Championship in June 2019. In August 2019, he secured a PGA Tour card for the 2019–20 season by finishing tied for second in the Albertsons Boise Open on the Korn Ferry Tour. He established a PGA Tour record with 19 consecutive rounds in the 60s. In February 2020, Hovland made history as the first Norwegian to win on the PGA Tour, claiming victory at the Puerto Rico Open. Later that year, in December 2020, he earned his second PGA Tour win at the Mayakoba Golf Classic presented by UNIFIN. In June 2021, he became the first Norwegian to win on the European Tour with his victory at the BMW International Open. He also represented Europe in the 2021 Ryder Cup. In November 2021, he successfully defended his title at the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba, setting a tournament record. A month later, he won the Hero World Challenge, earning him the nickname “Resort King.” In 2022, he started the year with a top-5 finish at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and won the Slync.io Dubai Desert Classic, moving to third in the Official World Golf Ranking. He successfully defended his Hero World Challenge title in December 2022.
In 2023, Hovland contended in major championships, finishing tied for 7th at the Masters and tied for 2nd at the PGA Championship. He won the Memorial Tournament in June 2023, defeating Denny McCarthy in a playoff. In August 2023, he won the BMW Championship with a course-record final round, followed by a victory at the Tour Championship, securing his first FedEx Cup and becoming the third-youngest champion. He represented Europe in the 2023 Ryder Cup, contributing to the team’s victory and setting a record for the largest winning margin in an 18-hole Ryder Cup match with Ludvig Åberg. In March 2025, Hovland won the Valspar Championship.
