The erudite and eloquent Vincent Kompany is a football manager and former professional player, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in the world, and of all-time in English football. He most famously marshalled the defence for Manchester City between 2008 and 2019. He was also a prolific member of the Belgium national squad for 15 years. He is an official FIFA ambassador for their charity SOS Children, and in 2013 he bought the Belgian third division club FC Bleid as a social commitment towards the youngsters of Brussels. He has won may awards, including the Belgian Young Professional Footballer of the Year in 2004 and 2005, the Belgian Professional Footballer of the Year 2004-05, the Premier League Player of the Season 2011-12 and the FWA Tribute Award 2020. He also graduated from the Manchester Business School in 2018 with an MBA.
Born and raised in Uccle, Belgium, Kompany started his career at Anderlecht at the age of 17, and graduated through their youth system, making his professional debut in 2003. He moved to German side Hamburg in 2006, and then in the summer of 2008 he completed a transfer to Manchester City. He quickly established himself as an integral part of their squad and was regarded as one of the bargain buys of the revolutionised City era, blossoming into one of the league’s best ever centre-backs. He was awarded the captaincy in the 2011-12 season and led the club to their first league title in 44 years. In July 2019, after 11 years at City, he left the club to become player-manager at RSC Anderlecht. A year later he retired from playing and was presented as the club’s first-team manager. On the international stage, Kompany made his debut for Belgium in 2004 when he was 17, one of the youngest players ever to do so. He went on to captain the nation, and represented them at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups.
