Wang Shun is the first Chinese swimmer ever to win a gold medal in an Olympic men’s medley swimming event. He is a skilled individual medley swimmer who won the gold medal in the men’s 200 metre individual medley at the 2020 Summer Olympics, making him the first Asian male swimmer to do so. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he had previously taken home a bronze medal in the same competition.
Wang has won five medals (one gold, two silvers, and two bronzes) in the Asian Games, in addition to four bronzes at the World Championships, two golds, and one bronze at the World Championships (short course). Wang now holds all-distance short and long course individual medley swimming national records (100, 200, and 400 metres). Additionally, he has the 200-meter individual medley Asian record.
Wang became the second male swimmer from China to win an Olympic gold medal following Sun Yang in July 2021, when he finished first in the men’s 200-meter individual medley event at the 2020 Summer Olympics. His time of 1:55.00 set a new Asian record. Wang won 6 gold medals at the 2021 National Games of China in September 2021, bringing his total number of gold medals won at the National Games to 15 and breaking the previous record for the athlete who won the most gold medals in the National Games’ history. He also tied his 10-year-old personal best time in the 200-meter freestyle (1:46.14).
