Short track speed skating star Petra Jászapáti is an Olympian who competed for Hungary at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. She also won two silver medals at the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway. Jászapáti competes in individual classification, 3000 m relay, 1500m superfinal, 3000 m, 500 m, 1000 m, 1500 m and mixed relay. Jászapáti won gold in the 500m event at the 2018/2019 World Cup in Almaty in Kazakhstan, making history as the first female Hungarian competitor to win a Wold Cup medal.
Born in Szeged, Hungary, Jászapáti loved both roller skating and short track as a young child, but chose short track so she could fulfil her dream of competing in the Olympic Games. She began skating for Hungarian club Szegedi Korcsolyazo Egyesule and began to pick up medals of various colours as she rose through the ranks of the sport, including her two Youth Olympic silver medals. She made her senior Olympic debut at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang and performed well against the best short track speed skaters in the world. She placed an impressive sixth in the 1500m and narrowly missed out on a medal after finishing fourth in the 3000m relay with her Hungarian teammates.
The 2019 European Championships saw Jászapáti take home a bronze medal for the 5,000-meter relay, and she is now focussed on training for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games in 2022.
