About

Wesley Darcel Walker, born on May 26, 1955, in San Bernardino, CA, established a notable career as a wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Jets from 1977 to 1989. Prior to his NFL career, Walker was an All-American for the California Golden Bears, where he demonstrated remarkable receiving statistics, including 86 catches for 2,206 yards and 22 touchdowns, averaging 25.7 yards per catch. He also contributed to the California Golden Bears track and field team, anchoring their 4x100m relay team to a second-place finish at the 1975 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, highlighting his exceptional athletic capabilities even in his early days.

His professional journey began after being selected by the New York Jets in the second round (33rd overall) of the 1977 NFL Draft. In his rookie year (1977), Walker played 14 games, catching 35 passes for 740 yards with 3 touchdowns, demonstrating his potential by averaging 21.1 yards per reception. The following year, 1978, marked a significant breakout season; he led the league in receiving yards with 1,169 yards on 48 receptions, averaging 24.4 yards per catch, and scored 8 touchdowns. For his performance, he received Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors, becoming the first Jet since Don Maynard to lead the league in receiving yards. Throughout his career, Walker consistently displayed his deep-threat ability. Notably, in 1986, he achieved a career-high with 12 receiving touchdowns and over 1,000 receiving yards.

Despite facing significant challenges, including being legally blind in his left eye and suffering various injuries throughout his career, Walker maintained a high level of play. He retired from the NFL in 1989, having played 154 games and accumulating 438 receptions for 8,306 yards and 71 touchdowns, placing him second all-time in Jets history for both receptions and touchdowns. His sustained performance and resilience led to his induction into the New York Jets Ring of Honor in 2012, alongside former teammate Mark Gastineau. Post-NFL, Walker transitioned into education, becoming a retired physical education teacher at Park View Elementary School in Kings Park, New York, and also contributing as an occasional sports radio commentator.
