William “Will” Bynum was born on January 4, 1983, in Chicago, Illinois. He began his basketball journey playing for Crane High School in Chicago, where he showcased significant talent, averaging 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game as a junior in 1999–2000, earning all-state honors. His senior year saw him further excel with averages of 27.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 7.0 assists, leading to all-city and Chicago Public Player of the Year accolades. These early achievements set the foundation for his collegiate career, starting at the University of Arizona and later transferring to Georgia Tech to be closer to his family.
Bynum’s college career included playing 31 games for the University of Arizona in his freshman year (2001–02), averaging 6.4 points and 1.4 assists. After transferring to Georgia Tech, he made a significant impact in the 2003–04 season, contributing to the Yellow Jackets reaching the National Runner-Up position. A notable moment was his game-winning score in the National Semifinal against Oklahoma State. In his senior year (2004–05), he was named to the ACC All-Tournament first team, averaging 20.7 points across three games and setting a Georgia Tech ACC Tournament record with 35 points in a semi-final victory. He averaged 12.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 32 games that season.
After going undrafted in the 2005 NBA draft, Bynum began his professional career demonstrating perseverance. He first played for the Roanoke Dazzle in the NBA D-League in 2005, where he was named the 2006 NBA D-League Rookie of the Year. This led to a 10-day contract and then a full contract with the Golden State Warriors in 2006, marking his NBA debut. He then spent two successful seasons with Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, helping them win the 2007 Israeli Basketball Premier League championship and earning the Finals MVP award. His return to the NBA saw him join the Detroit Pistons in 2008, where he played for six seasons, achieving a career-high 32 points on April 5, 2009, and a career-high 20 assists on March 12, 2010. He concluded his NBA career with a brief stint with the Washington Wizards in 2015, followed by playing internationally in China and Turkey, and also in the NBA G-League.
