William Hung

William Hung Cheung Hung, born on November 10, 1982, in Sha Tin, British Hong Kong, gained significant public attention in 2004 during the third season of “American Idol.” While a civil engineering student at the University of California, Berkeley, Hung auditioned for the show with a memorable, albeit off-key, performance of Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs.” Despite judges’ criticism regarding his singing and dancing abilities, his positive attitude resonated with audiences, leading to a rapid rise as a cult figure. This unexpected fame led to a recording contract with Koch Entertainment, resulting in his debut album, “Inspiration,” released in 2004. The album, primarily consisting of Hung singing over karaoke tracks, sold over 100,000 copies by August 2004 and reached the top spot on Billboard’s Top Independent Album Chart. His recording career also included the Christmas EP, “Hung for the Holidays” (2004), and a second album, “Miracle: Happy Summer from William Hung” (2005).

Hung leveraged his newfound celebrity into various entertainment ventures. He appeared in commercials for brands such as Ask.com, Game Show Network, and Cingular Wireless. His acting credits include a low-budget Hong Kong comedy film, “Where is Mama’s Boy” (2004), and guest appearances on television series like “Arrested Development” (2006) and “George Lopez” (2005), often lampooning his public persona. He performed at events such as a Golden State Warriors basketball game in 2004 and the Artichoke Festival in Castroville, California, where he was crowned Artichoke King in 2006. These experiences highlight his embrace of his unconventional path in the entertainment industry.

In 2011, Hung decided to conclude his music career, accepting a position as a technical crime analyst for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He later moved to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health around 2014. By 2017, he began a new chapter as a motivational speaker, sharing his unique journey and insights with various groups, including the Asian Realtors Association of America. He made surprise returns to “American Idol” for the season 15 finale in 2016 and again in season 20 in 2022, performing his signature song, “She Bangs,” showcasing his continued connection to the platform that launched his career. Hung has openly discussed personal challenges, including recovering from a gambling addiction that affected his marriage, demonstrating his commitment to rebuilding his life and inspiring others.
