Yoenis Cespedes Milanés, nicknamed “La Potencia” (The Power), was born on October 18, 1985, in Granma, Cuba. He spent eight seasons (2003-2010) playing for Granma in Cuba’s Serie Nacional, where he established himself as a prominent slugger. During his Cuban career, Cespedes compiled a .319 batting average, .404 on-base percentage, and .565 slugging percentage, hitting 169 home runs and driving in 557 runs over 528 games. He also represented the Cuba national team, earning gold medals in three international tournaments. His strong performance at the 2009 World Baseball Classic, where he batted .458 with two home runs and five RBI, led to him being named a member of the All-WBC team, showcasing his potential on a global stage.
Cespedes made his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut on March 28, 2012, with the Oakland Athletics after signing a four-year, $36 million contract. In his rookie season, he led the Athletics in batting average (.292), on-base percentage (.356), and slugging percentage (.505), finishing second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting to Mike Trout. He quickly became known for his power hitting and exceptional outfield arm, winning the Home Run Derby in both 2013 and 2014. Throughout his career, Cespedes played for several MLB teams, including the Boston Red Sox (2014), Detroit Tigers (2015), and New York Mets (2015-2018, 2020), delivering key performances that often propelled his teams to success. Notably, his offensive contributions in 2015 helped the Mets reach the World Series.
His career includes significant achievements such as being an AL All-Star in 2014 and an NL All-Star in 2016. He earned the Rawlings AL Gold Glove in 2015 and the NL Silver Slugger award in 2016, a testament to his all-around skill. Despite several injury setbacks, including heel surgeries in 2018 and an ankle fracture in 2019, Cespedes demonstrated resilience, making a return for the 2020 season.
