Yuetong Zhang is an international rock climber. Born in 2003, Zhang has proven her worth at a young age as a competitive rock climber. Zhang competes for the People’s Republic of China, she was born in Shenzhen and went to school in Nanshan District. From a very early age her talent was evident; her father Zhang Jiandong said that Yuetong started rock climbing when she was four years old. He supported her in her interest and took her to climbing clubs just across the border in Kowloon, Hong Kong for training.
Zhang has achieved a great deal, early in her sporting career, and has established herself as a key player and one to watch. She won the championship of a local rock climbing competition in Guangdong when she was only 9 and went on to become a national champion at the age of 12. At 13 she impressed everyone watching in the final of a rock climbing competition for the 13th National Games of China held in Chongqing on August 8th. Zhang became the youngest member of the national climbing training team and as a national team member, she had to move to train in Beijing and travel to competitions around the world.
Zhang has achieved many awards on the podium, some of her most recent results are in the IFSC Climbing World Cup in 2019 when she was seventh, and in 2020 she placed ninth. Zhang is part of the Olympic team of the People’s Republic of China. Zhang is passionate about her sport and her example is helping to make rock climbing a popular sport in China.
