Born in 1986 in the Mission District of San Francisco, California, Ethan Pringle began his climbing journey at the age of eight, discovering his local gym, Mission Cliffs. This early exposure to climbing quickly developed into a profound passion. By the age of twelve, Pringle had redpointed his first 5.13a route, followed by his first 5.14a route at thirteen, demonstrating early exceptional talent. He also excelled in competition climbing during his formative years, becoming the American youth national champion in lead climbing for four consecutive years from 1998 to 2002. In 2000, he earned a silver medal in lead at the IFSC Climbing World Youth Championships, marking him as a significant presence in the climbing community from a young age.
Pringle continued to advance his career, achieving national recognition by winning gold in the men’s USA national championships in lead in 2005, alongside silver medals in 2004 and 2006, and bronze in 2009 for lead and bouldering, respectively. His professional trajectory faced a significant challenge in 2009 when he suffered a severe labrum tear during the national bouldering championships. This injury threatened to end his climbing career but Pringle persevered, returning to top form after over a year of recovery. His reputation for being an ‘all-rounder’ grew as he consistently performed at high levels across various climbing disciplines, leading to a long-standing partnership with Mountain Hardwear, which began in 2008 and continues to this day, making him their second longest-standing athlete.
Throughout his career, Pringle has achieved numerous milestones. In 2007, he made an early repeat of Chris Sharma’s ‘Realization/Biographie’ (9a+/5.15a) in Ceuse, France, a route that was then considered among the world’s most difficult. He is also notable for the first repeat of ‘Jumbo Love’ (9b/5.15b) in 2015 at Clark Mountain, California, believed to be North America’s hardest sport route. In traditional climbing, his 2008 ascent of ‘Cobra Crack’ (8c/5.14b) and the 2016 first free ascent of ‘Blackbeard’s Tears’ (8c+/5.14c) on the Northern California Coast highlight his prowess in challenging traditional routes. Pringle’s achievements extend to bouldering with ascents such as ‘The Nest’ (V15/8C) in Red Rock Canyon, Nevada, in 2018.
