Yvonne Anuli Orji was born on December 2, 1983, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, and grew up in Laurel, Maryland. Her early education included attending Linden Hall, an all-girls boarding school in Lititz, Pennsylvania. Orji pursued higher education at George Washington University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in liberal arts and later a Master of Public Health. Despite her parents’ expectations for a career in medicine or law, she discovered a passion for comedy while performing stand-up at a beauty pageant during her graduate studies. This turning point led her to New York City in 2009 to pursue a career in comedy.
In 2015, Yvonne Orji achieved a significant career milestone by landing the role of Molly Carter in the HBO comedy series “Insecure,” a role she secured without an agent or prior substantial acting experience. She featured in 42 episodes of the series from 2016 to 2021, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination and three NAACP Image Awards. Beyond “Insecure,” Orji has expanded her acting resume with roles in films such as “Night School” (2018), “Spontaneous” (2020), and “Vacation Friends” (2021). She has also produced and starred in her own HBO stand-up specials, “Momma, I Made It!” (2020) and “A Whole Me” (2022). Her work extends to voice acting in animated series like “My Dad the Bounty Hunter” (2023) and “Velma” (2023-2024).
Orji has also authored the book “Bamboozled by Jesus: How God Tricked Me Into the Life of My Dreams,” released in 2021. In 2021, she began development on “First Gen,” a series for Disney+ based on her life, produced by Oprah Winfrey and David Oyelowo. Her commitment to philanthropy includes six months of work in Liberia with Population Services International (PSI) in 2008 and 2009, where she helped develop a mentoring program and a weekly talk show focused on preventing teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. She continues her charitable work as an ambassador for (RED) and a Literacy Champion for Jumpstart, and in collaborations with JetBlue for Good. In 2023, she signed a two-year first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television, reflecting her ongoing progression in the entertainment industry.
