Gretel Bueta, born Gretel Tippett on July 3, 1993, in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, displayed athletic talent from a young age. Growing up as the only daughter of Tony and Janet Tippett and sister to AFL footballers Kurt and Joel Tippett, she initially pursued a basketball career. Bueta played for the Australian Institute of Sport in the Women’s National Basketball League during the 2010/2011 season. In the 2011/2012 season, she played for Logan Thunder and was named WNBL Rookie of the Year before her season was cut short due to glandular fever. She also represented Australia in three junior World Championships: the 2009 U/19 World Championships, placing 5th; the 2010 U/17 World Championships, placing 7th; and the 2011 U/19 World Championships, placing 4th.
In March 2012, Bueta made the significant switch from basketball to netball, beginning her career as a goal attack and goal shooter. Her netball journey quickly gained momentum, playing as a replacement for the Queensland Firebirds in 2013 and being selected for the Australian under 21 netball team for the World Youth Netball Championship in Glasgow the same year, where Australia secured a silver medal. She made her ANZ Championship debut in 2014 with the NSW Swifts before returning to the Queensland Firebirds in 2015, where she has been a consistent force. She married Niko Bueta on March 7, 2020, and has three children: Bobby, Toby, and Lacy.
Bueta’s career has been marked by numerous achievements and national representation. She earned a gold medal at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, scoring 253 goals with a 96% shooting accuracy. She has been named to the Super Netball Team of the Year three times (2018, 2019, 2022) and received the prestigious Liz Ellis Diamond award in 2019, recognizing her as the best player in Australian domestic and international netball. After sitting out the 2020 season for the birth of her first child, she returned in 2021, landing a spot in the top 15 league shooters with 266 points at 80.5% accuracy, further cementing her status as a leading figure in the sport.
