Zehra Fazal was born in Libertyville, Illinois, USA. Prior to her career in voice acting, Fazal was recognized for her one-woman musical comedy show, “Headscarf and the Angry Bitch.” This show, which she described as partly fictional and partly autobiographical, explored themes of Muslim identity and living with a “hyphenated identity” in America. Her performance earned the “best solo performance award” at the Capital Fringe Festival in 2009 and had a sold-out run at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2010. Fazal’s ability to take existing concepts and adapt them into new forms was evident in her earlier work, such as translating and staging Takarazuka Revue’s “The Rose of Versailles” at Wellesley College, where she studied as a research intern with the Takarazuka Revue Company in 2004.
Fazal has established a significant presence in the voice acting industry, lending her voice to numerous characters in animated series and video games. A notable career milestone occurred during the development of “Young Justice: Outsiders,” where co-creator Greg Weisman specifically wrote the role for Halo with Fazal in mind. She further diversified her talent by voicing approximately a dozen additional characters within the same show. Her extensive filmography includes roles such as Nadia Rizavi in “Voltron: Legendary Defender” (2018), Amara in “Borderlands 3” (2019), General Yunan in “Amphibia” (2020), and Livewire in “My Adventures with Superman” (2023). In 2019, she received two Society of Voice Arts Awards for Outstanding Promo Campaign and Outstanding Body of Work.
Beyond her acting career, Fazal holds a B.A. from Wellesley College and is proficient in Japanese, French, and Urdu. She is an active supporter of the Paani Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing clean water inaccessibility and health disparities in rural South Asian communities. In her personal life, she has been married to Barry J. Neely since November 2023, and they have one child. Fazal continues to expand her impressive portfolio, with upcoming projects including “The Ren & Stimpy Show Reboot” (2024) and “The Bad Guys: Breaking In” (2025).
