China Zhang Jiaqi is a decorated Chinese diver, known for her record of Olympic and World Championship gold medals in synchronized platform events.
Zhang Jiaqi, along with French footballer Kylian Mbappé, became godmother and godfather to two baby pandas at Beauval Zoo in Paris. This partnership was part of a campaign to raise publicity and awareness for the panda species.
Zhang Jiaqi participated in the campaign for the 2022 Winter Olympics, including singing "See You in Beijing" with 55 other Olympic champions and performing at the BRTV Global New Year's Eve Ice and Snow Festival. She also served as a torchbearer for the event.
Zhang Jiaqi was born on May 28, 2004, in Beijing, China. Her athletic journey began in 2008 at a gymnastics club in Dongcheng District, Beijing. After being deemed unsuitable for gymnastics, she transitioned to diving at the General Administration of Sport of China’s diving club. By 2010, at less than seven years old, Zhang was selected for the second team of the Beijing diving squad, marking the official start of her professional diving training. Her progression continued, and by 2014, she joined the first team of the Beijing diving team.
Zhang’s competitive career saw significant milestones from a young age. In 2016, she won the National Diving Championships women’s single meter platform. The following year, 2017, she earned a silver medal in the women’s singles 10-meter platform and a gold in the women’s doubles 10-meter platform with partner Zhang Minjie at the FINA Diving Grand Prix in Germany. She also secured another national title in the women’s singles 10-meter platform. Her notable achievements continued at the 2018 Asian Games, where she and Zhang Minjie won gold in the women’s 10m synchro platform, and individually, she secured a silver medal in the women’s 10m platform.
In 2018, at the FINA Diving World Cup in Wuhan, Zhang Jiaqi, then 14, earned gold medals in both the women’s 10m platform and the women’s 10m synchro platform with Zhang Minjie. A pivotal moment in her career came at the 2020 Summer Olympics (held in 2021) in Tokyo, where she and Chen Yuxi secured a gold medal in the synchronized 10-meter platform event, contributing to China’s dominant “Dream Team” in diving. She further achieved a gold medal in the women’s 10m synchro at the 2019 World Aquatics Championships and two mixed synchro 10m platform gold medals at the 2023 and 2024 World Aquatics Championships.
