Drake continues to tease his long-awaited Views from the 6 album with ‘One Dance’. The single is built around a sample from MN2S’s own Crazy Cousinz that features vocals from Kyla, another MN2S signee.
Drake uses a sample from the 2008 Crazy Cousinz-produced Kyla track ‘Do You Mind’. This sample is the backbone of ‘One Dance’ from beginning to end. The track opens with Kyla’s vocals and Crazy Cousinz’s percussive piano riff at a slowed-down tempo. Drake’s new drum beat comes in, and the rapper-singer clues in listeners on his desire to dance, once, with a Hennessy in his hand.
‘One Dance’ continues Drake’s recent embrace of urban UK music culture. He recently performed at a Section Boyz concert and announced he had signed to JME & Skepta’s Better Boy Know label in an embrace of the grime scene.
As staples of UK funky, Kyla and Crazy Cousinz have made some great music together, including the Pete Tong-endorsed ‘Day Dreaming’, a huge hit that brought everyone involved significant acclaim. Crazy Cousinz have also worked with other MN2S artists including Jay Sean, Little Boots and Estelle with fantastic results.
The release of ‘One Dance’ has thrust Kyla and Crazy Cousinz back into the spotlight, and when Views is released on April 29th, we may well see a fully-fledged revival of the UK funky scene.
