Artful Dodger, originally comprising Mark Hill and Pete Devereux, formed in Southampton, England, in 1997. Hill, a trained percussionist and session musician, established a recording studio with Neil Kerr. Devereux, with a background in classical violin, grunge, and DJing, connected with Hill through this studio. The duo initially created bootleg remixes under the Artful Dodger moniker, releasing tracks through Fagin Records. Their style was characterized by a blend of R&B and house music, developing the 2-step garage sound. This period saw them remix tracks for artists such as Gabrielle and Olive.
Their career significantly advanced through a collaboration with Craig David, who they met via a youth project and later invited to their studio to contribute vocals. This partnership resulted in singles like “Something,” “What Ya Gonna Do,” and the notable “Re-Rewind.” These vinyl releases, initially on their own Centric Records, were later licensed to larger labels. In 2000, Artful Dodger released their debut album, “It’s All About the Stragglers,” through FFRR Records, which featured a compilation of their previously released tracks and introduced new vocalists. The album achieved commercial success, including a Platinum certification from the BPI. The duo also released several DJ mix albums, including “Rewind: The Sound of UK Garage” and “Re-Rewind Back by Public Demand.
Following Pete Devereux’s departure in 2001, and then Mark Hill’s exit, the Artful Dodger name was transferred through various entities, eventually leading to a new incarnation of the group featuring MC Alistair and DJ Dave Low. This new lineup continued to tour extensively, playing a range of dance music genres. In 2017, Hill and Devereux reunited under the name Original Dodger to release new music, including singles “Millionaire” and “Find Space,” and an EP titled “Momentum.” This reunion aimed to reclaim their legacy and create new material, demonstrating their lasting impact and continued relevance within the UK dance music landscape.
