Alexander Vargas Blay, known professionally as Alex Vargas, was born on February 17, 1988, in Hørsholm, Denmark, to a Danish-English mother and a Uruguayan father. His musical journey began early, leading him to relocate to London at the age of 17 to pursue a career in music. In London, Vargas signed with Geffen Records and formed the band Vagabond. During his time with Vagabond, the band successfully toured the UK, selling out two headline tours, and performed at major music festivals such as Glastonbury, T in the Park, and V Festival. This period established his presence in the music scene and honed his performance skills.
In 2010, Vargas transitioned to a solo career, marking a significant turning point in his artistic development. He quickly gained recognition for his distinctive vocal talent and songwriting. A notable collaboration occurred in 2013 when he performed as a vocalist with the trance band Above & Beyond at their acoustic show at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. He co-wrote and featured on five songs from their fourth studio album, “We Are All We Need,” which achieved commercial success by debuting at No. 1 on the US Dance/Electronic Albums (Billboard) chart and No. 12 on the UK album chart, further expanding his musical reach. In 2014, Vargas signed with Copenhagen Records, a move that led to the release of new material, including the standalone single “Till Forever Runs Out” and the viral hit “Solid Ground.” His EP “Giving Up the Ghost,” released in 2016, topped both the Danish and Dutch iTunes Album Charts, with the single “Shackled Up” reaching No. 1 on the Danish iTunes Singles Chart.
Vargas continued to build on his success with the release of his second full-length album, “Cohere,” on March 31, 2017. That same year, he co-wrote Bulgaria’s entry in the Eurovision Song Contest, “Beautiful Mess,” performed by Kristian Kostov, which secured 2nd place, Bulgaria’s best-ever result. His discography continued to grow with albums like “Ego (Super/Trip/Maniac)” in 2019 and “Big Big Machine” in 2023, the latter reaching No. 3 on the Danish charts. Throughout his career, Vargas has been recognized for his contributions to music, winning the Danish Artist of the Year award at the Danish Music Awards in 2016.
