What So Not is the electronic music project of Australian record producer Christopher John Emerson, known by his stage name Emoh Instead. The project began in 2010 as a duo with Harley Streten, known as Flume. Their early work included the debut EP “7 Dollar Bill” released in November 2011, and remixes for artists such as Peking Duk and Major Lazer. In early 2013, What So Not undertook the Massive Universe Tour across Australia, followed by the release of their second EP, “The Quack,” in May 2013, which featured a collaboration with Action Bronson. In June 2014, What So Not collaborated with RL Grime on the single “Tell Me,” noted for its melodic and percussive qualities.
In February 2015, Flume announced his departure from What So Not, leading to Emerson continuing the project as a solo artist. The “Gemini EP,” released in December 2015, marked the final release as a duo and included the track “Gemini” featuring George Maple, which charted on the Australian Singles Chart and Triple J Hottest 100. This EP garnered over 800,000 downloads and achieved global success on iTunes Electronic EP charts. As a solo artist, Emerson released the “Divide & Conquer” EP in September 2016. He further collaborated with notable artists such as Skrillex and RL Grime on the single “Waiting” in November 2016, a track developed over several years.
His debut solo album, “Not All the Beautiful Things,” was released in March 2018, featuring collaborations with Skrillex, Slumberjack, San Holo, and Toto. The album included singles like “Stuck In Orbit” with Jono Ma and “Beautiful” with Winona Oak, leading to a national Australian tour. After a temporary hiatus announced in February 2020, What So Not returned in 2021 with a remix for Run The Jewels and a new track, “The Change,” featuring DMA’s. His career continued with the release of the album “Anomaly” in 2022 and the “Motions” EP in August 2024, which featured collaborations with artists such as Lucy Lucy, MNDR, IMANU, Habstrakt, and Maiah Manser.
