Chris Moyles

Christopher David Moyles was born on February 22, 1974, in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, to an Irish mother and an English father who worked for the Post Office. He attended Mount St Mary’s Catholic High School. Moyles began his radio career early, volunteering at WBHS (Wakefield’s Broadcast to Hospitals Service) while still in school. He then joined Aire FM at the age of 16 as an assistant to DJ Carl Kingston and also presented on Radio TopShop. His early career progression included stints at Radio Luxembourg in 1992, where he worked under the pseudonym Chris Holmes until the station closed, and later at Pulse of West Yorkshire in 1993, presenting the evening show. He moved to Signal 1 in Stoke-on-Trent, continuing in an evening slot, and then to the Chiltern Radio Network in 1995, where he hosted evening and late-night shows that were simulcast across several regional stations.

In 1996, Moyles joined Capital FM in London, hosting ‘The Late Bit’ on Friday and Saturday evenings and covering for other DJs. He declined an offer to host the breakfast show at Kiss 100 before making a significant move to BBC Radio 1 in July 1997. At Radio 1, he started with the 4:00 AM – 7:00 AM Early Breakfast show, quickly earning recognition with a Silver Sony Awards DJ of the Year in May 1998. He progressed to a Saturday breakfast slot and then took over the drivetime show from 4:00 PM – 5:45 PM in October 1998, working alongside David ‘Comedy Dave’ Vitty. On January 5, 2004, Moyles began presenting the highly influential Radio 1 Breakfast Show, significantly increasing its listenership and becoming the station’s longest-serving breakfast presenter by September 7, 2009. His tenure at Radio 1 concluded on September 14, 2012.

Following his departure from BBC Radio 1, Moyles returned to broadcasting on September 7, 2015, as the host of ‘The Chris Moyles Show’ on the newly rebranded Radio X, where he continues to present in a breakfast slot from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, with an additional Saturday morning show. Outside of radio, Moyles has diversified his career, providing voice work for films such as ‘Wimbledon’ (2004), ‘Robots’ (2005), and ‘War of the Worlds’ (2005), and appearing in television shows like ‘Live with Chris Moyles’ (2002) on Channel 5 and ‘Chris Moyles’ Quiz Night’ (2009-2012) on Channel 4. He also participated in the charity BT Red Nose Climb for Comic Relief in 2009, reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, and has written two autobiographies: ‘The Gospel according to Chris Moyles: The Story of One Man and His Mouth’ (2006) and ‘Chris Moyles: The Difficult Second Book’ (2007). In 2022, he participated in ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’
