About

Joel Thomas Zimmerman, known professionally as Deadmau5, was born on January 5, 1981, in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. His musical journey began in the late 1990s, where he created early works using Impulse Tracker, demonstrating a strong influence from chiptune and demoscene movements. The moniker “Deadmau5” originated from an incident in 2000 when he discovered a dead mouse inside his computer, leading to his friends calling him the “dead mouse guy.” He shortened it to Deadmau5 for an online chat room due to character limitations. In 2005, Zimmerman released his debut studio album, “Get Scraped.” A year later, he released “Vexillology.” In 2007, he established his record label, Mau5trap.

His career saw a significant turning point with the release of “Random Album Title” in 2008. This album, certified gold in Canada and silver in the United Kingdom, featured prominent tracks such as “Faxing Berlin,” “Not Exactly,” and “I Remember,” a collaboration with Kaskade. The track “I Remember” reached number one on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart in 2009. The same year, his fourth studio album, “For Lack of a Better Name,” was released to critical acclaim, including “Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff” with Rob Swire and the widely praised “Strobe.” In 2010, his fifth studio album, “4×4=12,” yielded popular singles such as “Some Chords,” “Animal Rights” with Wolfgang Gartner, and “Raise Your Weapon” featuring Greta Svabo Bech. The song “Some Chords” was later featured in an episode of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” where Zimmerman made a cameo appearance.

Throughout his career, Zimmerman has received six Grammy Award nominations and four Juno Awards. He has consistently pushed boundaries in electronic music, frequently collaborating with artists like Kaskade, Rob Swire, and Wolfgang Gartner. In 2012, he released “The Veldt” and “Professional Griefers,” which were commercially successful and featured on his sixth album, “Album Title Goes Here.” After departing from Ultra Records, he released “While(1<2)" in 2014, followed by "W:/2016Album/" in 2016. In recent years, Zimmerman has explored new musical avenues, including composing the score for the 2019 Netflix film "Polar" and forming supergroups like Kx5 with Kaskade and Rezzmau5 with Rezz. In 2024, he received the Legend Award at the Electronic Dance Music Awards and was inducted into the Music Industry Hall of Fame at Canadian Music Week.
