Alexander Harry Kotz, known professionally as Elderbrook, was born on December 20, 1992, in London, England, and grew up in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. His musical journey began at age 16 in an indie band, and by 19, he transitioned to a singer-songwriter phase, describing it as a “folky acoustic thing.” While attending university, Elderbrook was introduced to electronic dance music, which shifted his musical direction. He initially aimed for a hip-hop and soulful sound, incorporating his distinct vocals into electronic compositions. After graduating, he adopted the moniker Elderbrook and released his debut EP, “Could,” in 2015. This EP featured tracks like “How Many Times,” which gained significant attention and marked his entry into the electronic music scene.
Elderbrook’s career gained substantial momentum in 2015 with his collaboration with German duo Andhim, who remixed his track “How Many Times.” This collaboration was well-received, with Mixmag rating it highly and categorizing it among the best songs of 2015. The same year, he released his second EP, “Travel Slow,” and began remixing tracks for other artists, including Pablo Nouvelle. In 2016, he further expanded his influence, touring and performing as a supporting act for artists such as Gorgon City, including a performance at Brixton Academy. He also collaborated with Gorgon City on their single “Smile” and was commissioned to remix Clean Bandit’s hit song “Rockabye.” These early milestones established Elderbrook’s reputation within the electronic music industry, leading to his most significant breakthrough.
In 2017, Elderbrook achieved international recognition with his collaboration “Cola” alongside CamelPhat. This track became a global success, topping the Dance Club Songs chart in the United States and the UK Indie chart. “Cola” also earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording at the 2018 Grammy Awards. Its platinum certification in the UK, selling over 600,000 copies, cemented its status as a major dance anthem. Following this success, Elderbrook released his debut studio album, “Why Do We Shake in the Cold?” in 2020 via Parlophone Records, which included the UK Singles Chart-peaking track “Something About You” with Rudimental. His sophomore album, “Little Love,” released in 2023, explored themes of parental love, further showcasing his artistic evolution.
