About

Perfume, formed in Hiroshima, Japan, in 2000, consists of members Nocchi (Ayano Ōmoto), Kashiyuka (Yuka Kashino), and A-chan (Ayaka Nishiwaki). The group initially debuted with Yuka Kawashima, who later left to focus on her studies and was replaced by Ōmoto. After their formation within Actors School Hiroshima, they released their first singles “Omajinai Perori” and “Kareshi Boshūchū” in 2002 under Momiji Label. In 2003, the trio moved to Tokyo, where they began working with music producer Yasutaka Nakata, who significantly shaped their technopop sound. Their early indie releases, including “Sweet Donuts,” “Monochrome Effect,” and “Vitamin Drop” (2003-2004) under Bee-Hive Records, laid the groundwork for their distinct musical style.

The group achieved major label debut on September 21, 2005, with “Linear Motor Girl” under Tokuma Japan Communications. While their early major label releases saw modest commercial success, a turning point came in 2007 with the single “Polyrhythm.” This track gained significant attention after being featured in an NHK national recycling campaign and consistently played on Kimura Kaela’s radio show, leading to a sold-out live show and a performance at the Summer Sonic Festival. Their debut studio album, “Game” (2008), marked a major breakthrough, reaching number one on the Oricon charts and becoming the first technopop album to do so since 1983. This success initiated a streak of nine consecutive number-one albums. Subsequent albums like “Triangle” (2009) and “JPN” (2011) further solidified their position in the music industry.

In 2012, Perfume expanded their international presence by signing with Universal Music Group, leading to their fourth studio album, “Level3” (2013). Their global ventures included performances at the Ultra Music Festival in South Korea (2013) and a World Tour encompassing Cologne, London, and Paris. The group continued to blend technology with their artistry, notably through collaborations with Rhizomatiks for live shows and interactive projects. In 2019, Perfume made history as the first J-pop group to perform at the Coachella Festival. Despite announcing a planned hiatus starting in 2026 to pursue new challenges, Perfume has committed to returning “more powerful than ever,” showcasing their dedication to their craft and fanbase. Their forthcoming concept album “Nebula Romance” (Part 1 in 2024, Part 2 in 2025) celebrates their 25th anniversary.
