Eliza Sophie Caird, born on April 15, 1988, in Westminster, London, UK, began her musical journey at a young age, performing in London venues from 15. The daughter of stage director John Caird and musical theatre actress Frances Ruffelle, Eliza also had early acting roles, including Young Cosette in Les Misérables (1996–1997) and the lead role in The Secret Garden (2001) with the Royal Shakespeare Company. She later signed with Parlophone in 2008, setting the stage for her debut in the music industry.
Her self-titled debut album, released on July 12, 2010, achieved platinum status and featured two UK top-40 singles: “Skinny Genes” and “Pack Up,” with the latter reaching number five on the UK Singles Chart. Eliza continued to make her mark on the music scene, collaborating with electronic music duo Disclosure on their 2013 single “You & Me,” which was featured on their number one debut album Settle. In 2013, she also premiered “Big When I Was Little,” a single that joined BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 playlists and was included on her second studio album, In Your Hands.
In 2017, Eliza rebranded her artistic identity, dropping “Doolittle” and releasing music simply as Eliza. This shift marked a new phase in her career, characterized by a change in sound. She released the album A Real Romantic in 2018, followed by A Sky Without Stars in 2022. The latter received positive reviews, with recognition for its soulful and melodic qualities, signaling her continued artistic development and reinvention.
