Hugh Thomas Diaz Morgan, born on August 7, 1968, in New York City, is an American musician of Puerto Rican-American and Irish-American heritage. His early life in New York City involved a period of petty crime and cocaine dealing, leading to a critical decision between incarceration and joining the U.S. Marines. Opting for the latter, Morgan served in the Marines, an experience he marks with a “Semper Fidelis” tattoo. After an honorable discharge, he began DJing in New York clubs, where he met Brian “Fast” Leiser, a pivotal encounter that led to the formation of the Fun Lovin’ Criminals in 1993 alongside Steve Borgovini.
As the frontman, vocalist, and guitarist for the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Morgan was instrumental in writing and producing the band’s material. They achieved significant success with six studio albums, three of which charted in the UK Top 10, and eight UK Top 40 singles. The band’s debut album, “Come Find Yourself,” released in 1996, featured prominent hits like “Scooby Snacks” and “King of New York.” Their career culminated in over 10 million albums sold worldwide across more than 10 countries. Morgan departed from the Fun Lovin’ Criminals in November 2021, and he now performs with his new band. His musical style blends alternative rock, hip-hop, jazz, reggae, and funk, reflecting his wide-ranging musical knowledge acquired from growing up in the diverse music scene of 1970s and 1980s New York City.
Beyond music, Morgan has established himself as a prominent broadcaster with the BBC. He hosts “The Huey Show” on BBC Radio 6 Music, which earned a Bronze Award at the 2009 Sony Radio Academy Awards, and has presented various shows on BBC Radio 2 since 2011. His television appearances include “Never Mind the Buzzcocks,” “The Underdog Show,” and “Liza & Huey’s Pet Nation.” Morgan is also an author, releasing “Rebel Heroes: The Renegades of Music & Why We Still Need Them” in 2015 and his autobiography, “The Fun Lovin’ Criminal,” in 2025. His voice-over work includes narration for National Geographic’s “Drugs Inc” and “Underworld Inc,” and advertising campaigns for brands such as Wagamama and Lynx.
