John Walter Schuster, known professionally as John Summit, was born on July 29, 1994, in Naperville, Illinois. He pursued an education in accounting at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he was also a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and DJed at local venues. In 2019, he transitioned from a CPA position at Ernst & Young to fully dedicate himself to music production. His career found significant momentum in 2020 with the release of his single “Deep End” on Defected Records, which achieved the longest-running Beatport No. 1 track of that year.
Following his breakout success, Summit continued to build his profile with further releases in 2021, including the collaboration “Sun Came Up” with Sofi Tukker and “Human” (featuring Echoes), which became a No. 1 U.S. dance track. By the end of 2021, he had garnered over 4 million Spotify listeners. His increasing influence was acknowledged with accolades such as Dancing Astronaut’s Breakout Artist of the Year and Beatport’s top-selling artist across all genres for 2021. In 2022, he expanded his reach through extensive tours across Europe, Australia, and the United States.
A significant development in Summit’s career came with the establishment of his own record label and event brand, initially named Off the Grid in 2022 and later rebranded as Experts Only in 2023. This change reflected his personal interests, particularly his passion for skiing and mountains. Under this label, he released “Where You Are” (featuring Hayla) in early 2023, a track that reached the Billboard Top 10, hit No. 1 on the Mediabase U.S. Dance Radio chart, and was later recognized by Barack Obama as one of his favorite songs of the year. In 2024, his debut album, “Comfort in Chaos,” reached number 2 on the U.S. Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and number 39 on the U.S. Billboard 200, securing a nomination for Top Dance/Electronic Album at the Billboard Music Awards.
