About

Phantogram, an American music duo from Greenwich, New York, was formed in 2007 by multi-instrumentalists and vocalists Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter. The duo, who were friends since preschool, initially came together to work on Carter’s songwriting ideas after Barthel returned from Champlain College and Carter from a stint with his experimental band, Grand Habit. They first performed under the name Charlie Everywhere, releasing two EPs on Sub-Bombin Records. In 2009, upon signing with the UK label Barely Breaking Even (BBE), they changed their name to Phantogram, inspired by the optical illusion where two-dimensional images appear three-dimensional, a concept they felt resonated with their music. Their initial self-released EP in 2009 was followed by “Running From the Cops” on BBE.

The band’s professional trajectory advanced significantly in October 2009 when they signed with Barsuk Records, enabling a broader release of their music. Their debut album, “Eyelid Movies,” was released in Europe in 2009 via BBE and Indica Records in Canada, with Barsuk Records handling the US release in February 2010. The album garnered favorable reviews and featured singles like “Mouthful of Diamonds” and “When I’m Small.” Phantogram continued to expand their discography with the EP “Nightlife” in 2011, which included the single “Don’t Move.” A turning point in their career involved collaborations with Big Boi from OutKast in 2012, contributing to his album “Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors” and later forming the collaborative project Big Grams in 2015. Their reputation grew through extensive touring and performances at major North American festivals such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Austin City Limits, demonstrating their impact across various musical landscapes.

The duo’s subsequent albums further cemented their standing in the music industry. After signing with Republic Records, they released the “Phantogram” EP in 2013 and their second studio album, “Voices,” in 2014, which contained singles “Bill Murray” and “Fall in Love.” The album “Three” (2016) reached No. 9 on the Billboard 200, a significant milestone, and was deeply influenced by personal loss, leading to the creation of the single “Someday” (2018), with proceeds benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Their album “Ceremony” was released in 2020, followed by active collaborations including a track with Tom Morello in 2021 and their fifth studio album, “Memory of a Day,” released in 2024, featuring singles like “Come Alive.” Phantogram’s journey from local performances in Saratoga Springs to international recognition highlights their consistent artistic development and ability to adapt while maintaining their distinct sound.
