Tijs Michiel Verwest, known professionally as Tiësto, was born on January 17, 1969, in Breda, North Brabant, Netherlands. His passion for music began at the age of 12, leading him to DJ professionally at school parties by age 14. Between 1985 and 1994, he held residencies at various clubs in the Netherlands, refining his DJing style by playing extended sets. During this early period, he explored genres such as new beat and acid house. In 1994, he started releasing material on Noculan Records’ sub-labels, producing hardcore and gabber tracks under aliases like Da Joker and DJ Limited. His talent was recognized by Basic Beat Recordings, and shortly after signing with them, he co-founded Black Hole Recordings with Arny Bink in 1997. This venture allowed him to release acclaimed series like ‘Magik’ and ‘In Search of Sunrise’, and to establish significant sub-labels including SongBird and In Trance We Trust.
From 1998 to 2000, Tiësto’s career saw significant collaborations and milestones. He partnered with Ferry Corsten to form Gouryella, a trance duo that achieved international chart success with tracks like ‘Gouryella’ and ‘Walhalla’, both certified Gold. During this time, he also collaborated with Benno de Goeij of Rank 1 as Kamaya Painters. In 1999, he launched the ‘In Search of Sunrise’ series and performed his first major breakthrough set at ID&T Innercity. He was the first DJ to perform live on stage at an Olympic Games, specifically at the 2004 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in Athens, an event that significantly broadened his global recognition. His performance included tracks created specifically for the ceremony, later released as ‘Parade of the Athletes’.
Tiësto continued to achieve commercial and critical success, including being voted World No. 1 DJ by DJ Magazine for three consecutive years from 2002 to 2004. He released his debut solo album, ‘In My Memory’, in 2001, which featured hit singles such as ‘Lethal Industry’ and ‘Flight 643’. His second studio album, ‘Just Be’ (2004), included ‘Traffic’, which became the first non-vocal track in 23 years to reach number one on the Dutch national charts. In 2015, he won a Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical, for his remix of John Legend’s ‘All of Me’. His subsequent albums, ‘Elements of Life’ (2007), ‘Kaleidoscope’ (2009), ‘A Town Called Paradise’ (2014), ‘The London Sessions’ (2020), and ‘Drive’ (2023), demonstrated his continuous evolution and exploration of various electronic music genres, culminating in a diverse discography and a continued presence as a prominent figure in the electronic music scene.
