Alabama

Alabama originated in Fort Payne, Alabama, in 1969, formed by cousins Randy Owen (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Teddy Gentry (bass, backing vocals). They were soon joined by their cousin Jeff Cook (lead guitar, fiddle, keyboards). Initially performing as Young Country and later Wildcountry, the trio spent six years playing in bars across the Southeast, including a significant period at The Bowery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. During this time, they focused on developing original material while also performing cover songs. The band’s early career involved self-financing their recordings, including albums like “Wildcountry” (1976), “Deuces Wild” (1977), and “Alabama Band No. 3” (1979). A key turning point came in 1977 when they signed a one-record deal with GRT Records, leading to their name change to Alabama. After facing challenges with GRT’s bankruptcy and contractual obligations, they acquired their release and continued to pursue mainstream success, engaging in extensive touring with over 300 shows in one year.

The early 1980s marked Alabama’s breakthrough with RCA Records, starting a period of sustained commercial success. Their debut RCA single, “Tennessee River,” became their first number one hit on the Billboard country chart, triggering a streak of 21 consecutive number one singles, a record across genres. Other notable hits from this era include “Love in the First Degree” (1981), “Mountain Music” (1982), “Dixieland Delight” (1983), and “Song of the South” (1988). The band released multiple multi-platinum albums, including “Feels So Right,” “Mountain Music,” and “The Closer You Get…”. They received numerous accolades, including the CMA Entertainer of the Year award for three consecutive years (1982–1984) and five ACM Entertainer of the Year awards (1982–1986). Alabama’s touring incorporated elements of rock concerts, further broadening their appeal. Their blend of styles contributed to a crossover success that significantly expanded country music’s audience.

Despite a slight decline in chart performance during the 1990s, Alabama continued to produce hit singles and achieve gold and platinum album certifications. Key songs from this decade include “Jukebox in My Mind” (1990) and “I’m in a Hurry (And Don’t Know Why)” (1992). The band announced their American Farewell tour in 2002, embarking on an extensive series of shows that concluded in 2004. In later years, the band reunited for special events, including a benefit concert for tornado relief in Alabama in 2011. They released new music, such as the album “Southern Drawl” in 2015. Jeff Cook, a founding member, continued to perform with the band despite battling Parkinson’s disease, until his passing in 2022. Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry continue to tour and record, maintaining Alabama’s legacy as one of country music’s most successful groups.
