The Monarch Team first caught up with Albert Hammond Jr. on the night of his DJ set at Los Angeles' Winston House.
Hammond covered "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot" by Vera Lynn mixed with the chorus from George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" as part of Amazon's annual music series titled Indie for the Holidays. The song was released on December 1, 2017.
In 2009, Hammond released his own line of men's suits which he co-designed with stylist Ilaria Urbinati. The suits were at first only available at Urbinati's soon-to-open Confederacy boutique in Los Angeles.
Hammond also collaborated with Elliot Aronow of Jacques-Elliott for a collection of ties in 2015.
Albert Louis Hammond Jr., born on April 9, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, is a first-generation American with British-Gibraltarian and Argentinian heritage. His father, Albert Hammond Sr., is a renowned songwriter, and his mother, Claudia Fernández, was a model. Hammond Jr. began playing guitar at age nine and attended Institut Le Rosey, a Swiss boarding school, where he met future bandmate Julian Casablancas. After completing high school at Buckley School in Los Angeles and briefly attending New York University, he moved to New York City in 1998.
In 1999, Casablancas invited Hammond Jr. to join The Strokes, where he became the last member to solidify the band’s lineup. As a core member, he contributes rhythm and lead guitar, occasionally keyboards and backing vocals. The Strokes quickly gained critical acclaim, releasing their first demo in 2001 and subsequently two EPs and six full-length albums, with their most recent, “The New Abnormal,” released in 2020. Hammond Jr. co-wrote “Automatic Stop” for the band’s second album “Room on Fire” and developed instrumental pieces for their 2001 tour video, later reworked for his solo career. He is known for his signature style of wearing three-piece suits, even launching his own clothing line, and credits influenced the band’s visual identity.
Alongside his work with The Strokes, Hammond Jr. established a solo career, releasing his debut album, “Yours to Keep,” in 2006. He followed this with “¿Cómo Te Llama?” in 2008, the EP “AHJ” in 2013, and subsequent albums “Momentary Masters” (2015), “Francis Trouble” (2018), and “Melodies on Hiatus” (2023). These solo endeavors have allowed him to explore different musical expressions and collaborate with other artists. Beyond music, Hammond Jr. has ventured into entrepreneurship, launching a wine seltzer brand named Jetway, demonstrating his diverse interests and creative pursuits.
