About

Barry Knapp Bostwick was born on February 24, 1945, in San Mateo, California. He showed an early interest in performing, putting on musicals and puppet shows with his elder brother, Peter. He pursued formal training at San Diego’s United States International University’s School for the Performing Arts, switching his major from music to drama, and later attended the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at New York University. His early career included work as a circus performer and non-musical stage roles in productions such as “War and Peace” (1968) and “The Misanthrope” (1968), before making his Broadway debut in “Cock-a-Doodle Dandy” in 1969.

Bostwick’s career gained significant momentum with his role as Danny Zuko in the 1972 Broadway musical “Grease,” for which he earned a Tony Award nomination. He later achieved widespread recognition as Brad Majors in the cult classic film, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (1975). This period also saw him continue his success on Broadway, winning a Tony Award in 1977 for his performance in “The Robber Bridegroom.” His versatility extended to television and film with roles in “Movie Movie” (1978) and television miniseries like “George Washington” (1984) and “War and Remembrance” (1988), for which he received a Golden Globe Award.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Bostwick maintained a consistent presence in entertainment. He played Mayor Randall Winston for six seasons on the sitcom “Spin City” (1996–2002) and had recurring roles in dramas such as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” His later work includes guest appearances in various television series, voice acting roles, and film projects, demonstrating a sustained career across different genres and platforms. In 1997, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, successfully underwent surgery, and later received the Gilda Radner Courage Award in 2004 for his advocacy.
