Amy Louise Billings, known professionally as Amy Shark, was born on May 14, 1986, on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Her early musical endeavors, from 2008 to 2012, saw her perform and release material under the name Amy Cushway. During this period, she played acoustic gigs at local venues, released two EPs, “I Thought of You Out Loud” (2008) and “Love’s Not Anorexic” (2009), demonstrating her early songwriting and performing skills. She also formed a band called Fly Boy Fly in late 2010. Her first album, “It’s a Happy City,” was released in March 2012. These initial years laid the foundation for her future career, showcasing her dedication to music despite limited widespread recognition.
Her career trajectory significantly shifted in 2016 with the release of the single “Adore.” This song garnered substantial airplay on Triple J, initiating a bidding war among major labels and leading to her signing with Wonderlick/Sony in November 2016. “Adore” subsequently peaked at number 3 on the ARIA Singles Chart and was ranked number 2 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016. In March 2017, she released “Weekends” followed by the EP “Night Thinker” in April, which reached number 2 on the ARIA Singles Chart. The success continued with her album “Love Monster” (July 2018), which debuted at number 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart and became the highest-selling album by an Australian artist in 2018. This period marked her breakthrough, earning her multiple ARIA Music Awards, including Best Pop Release and Breakthrough Artist in 2017, and Album of the Year, Best Female Artist, Best Pop Release, and Producer of the Year (for “I Said Hi”) in 2018.
Shark continued to build on her success with her album “Cry Forever,” which debuted at number 1 on the ARIA Charts in 2021. This album included collaborations with artists like Ed Sheeran and Keith Urban, further expanding her reach across genres. She has also made appearances on television, serving as a judge for “Australian Idol” in both 2023 and 2024. Her latest studio album, “Sunday Sadness,” was released on August 9, 2024, continuing her consistent output in the music industry. Throughout her career, Amy Shark has received numerous awards and nominations, including 8 ARIA Music Awards and multiple APRA Awards, affirming her status as a prominent figure in Australian music.
