Myron Lavell Avant, known mononymously as Avant, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 26, 1978. As the youngest of five siblings in a family that faced financial challenges, Avant developed an early passion for music. His mother encouraged this interest by exposing him to classic R&B artists such as Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye. During his high school years at the Cleveland School of the Arts, he pursued acting. After graduation, he worked in factory jobs, continuing to hone his musical craft.
Avant began writing songs at the age of 14. His independent release of the debut single “Separated” in 2000, a song reflecting on a failed romantic relationship, generated significant buzz and radio play. This success led to a recording deal with Magic Johnson Music. In 2000, he released his debut album, “My Thoughts,” which sold over 1.3 million copies in the United States and 4.4 million worldwide through MCA Records. The album featured a popular remake of the 1983 René & Angela ballad “My First Love” with Keke Wyatt, which reached the top 5 of the R&B chart. His second album, “Ecstasy,” released in 2002, included another top ten hit, “Makin’ Good Love.” “Private Room” followed in 2003, reaching number four on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, with the track “Read Your Mind” charting at 13th on the Hot 100.
His career continued with the 2006 album “Director,” which topped the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. He released a self-titled fifth album in 2008 and later signed with Verve Forecast for his sixth studio album, “The Letter,” in 2010. Avant released “The VIII” in 2015 and “Can We Fall in Love” in 2020. Throughout his career, Avant has released 15 singles and 9 albums, achieving three Platinum-selling albums and contributing to the R&B landscape for over two decades.
