About

Jared Joseph Leto was born on December 26, 1971, in Bossier City, Louisiana. Raised across the United States in states such as Wyoming, Virginia, and Colorado, Leto’s childhood was influenced by his mother’s involvement in the hippie movement, which encouraged artistic expression. He initially studied painting at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts before shifting his focus to acting at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 1992, Leto moved to Los Angeles with aspirations for a musical career, while pursuing acting opportunities. His early television appearances included guest roles in “Camp Wilder” (1992), “Almost Home” (1993), and “Rebel Highway” (1994). A significant turning point came with his casting as Jordan Catalano in the television series “My So-Called Life” (1994–1995), a role that brought him widespread recognition.

Leto’s film career began with the ensemble piece “How to Make an American Quilt” (1995). He earned critical attention for his first leading role in “Prefontaine” (1997), portraying long-distance runner Steven Prefontaine, a role for which he immersed himself intensely, including training and meeting Prefontaine’s family. In 1998, Leto co-founded the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars with his brother Shannon Leto. The band released its self-titled debut album in 2002 to positive reviews. Concurrently, Leto continued to take on challenging film roles, including a supporting role in Terrence Malick’s “The Thin Red Line” (1998), and appearances in cult classics like David Fincher’s “Fight Club” (1999) and “American Psycho” (2000). His portrayal of a heroin addict in Darren Aronofsky’s “Requiem for a Dream” (2000) involved significant physical transformation and garnered critical acclaim, solidifying his reputation for intense method acting.

Over the 2000s and 2010s, Leto balanced his acting and music careers. He reunited with David Fincher for “Panic Room” (2002) and appeared in films such as Oliver Stone’s “Alexander” (2004) and “Lord of War” (2005). His commitment to his roles was further demonstrated by his significant weight gain to play Mark David Chapman in “Chapter 27” (2007). After a five-year hiatus from film, Leto returned to acting with “Dallas Buyers Club” (2013), portraying Rayon, a transgender woman with AIDS. This role earned him an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor, highlighting his transformative performance and dedication, which included losing 30 pounds and fully immersing himself in the character. His subsequent roles include the Joker in “Suicide Squad” (2016), Niander Wallace in “Blade Runner 2049” (2017), Albert Sparma in “The Little Things” (2021), and Paolo Gucci in “House of Gucci” (2021), the latter two earning him additional nominations.
