Brittany Amber Howard was born on October 2, 1988, in Athens, Alabama. Her early life was spent in a junkyard, and she developed an early interest in music, learning to write poetry and play piano from her older sister, Jaime. Howard began playing guitar at age 13, inspired by artists like Dionne Warwick and Elvis Presley. She attended East Limestone High School where she met future Alabama Shakes bassist Zac Cockrell. After high school, Howard worked for the United States Postal Service before dedicating herself entirely to music.
Howard rose to prominence as the lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primary songwriter for the band Alabama Shakes. The band, initially formed as “The Shakes” with bassist Zac Cockrell, drummer Steve Johnson, and guitarist Heath Fogg, signed with ATO Records. Their debut album, “Boys & Girls,” released in 2012, garnered critical acclaim and Grammy nominations. Their second album, “Sound & Color,” released in April 2015, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and received favorable reviews. Over the years, Howard has accumulated five Grammy Awards from nine nominations, including for Best Alternative Music Album. Her extensive work includes performances on “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” While on hiatus from Alabama Shakes, Howard explored other musical projects, including the rock band Thunderbitch and the trio Bermuda Triangle.
In 2018, Alabama Shakes went on hiatus, paving the way for Howard to launch her solo career. Her debut solo studio album, “Jaime,” released in 2019, received critical acclaim and earned seven Grammy nominations, winning Best Rock Song for “Stay High.” Her follow-up album, “What Now,” was released in February 2024. In 2023, Rolling Stone recognized her talent by including her in their “250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” list. Howard also made her acting debut in the animated film “Thelma the Unicorn” in May 2024. Additionally, she announced a new hardcore project, KUMITE, scheduled to debut in January 2025, and co-wrote an original track, “Pale Pale Moon,” for the film “Sinners,” further showcasing her versatility and continuous artistic evolution.
