About

Celeste Epiphany Waite was born on May 5, 1994, in Culver City, California, to an English mother and a Jamaican father. At the age of three, she moved to Dagenham, UK, and later to Saltdean, Brighton, where she spent most of her early years. Her musical journey began with discovering artists like Aretha Franklin, and she later found influence in Thelonious Monk and Koko Taylor. At 16, after the passing of her father, Celeste wrote her first song, “Sirens,” which gained initial attention after being posted on YouTube, leading to her first management contact. She pursued music technology for her sixth form education at Varndean College and began serious studio work and local performances in Brighton after graduation.

Celeste started her career in 2014, contributing vocals for electronic producers such as Avicii, Tieks, and Real Lies, while also self-publishing music on SoundCloud. Her debut solo EP, “The Milk & the Honey,” was released in 2017 under Lily Allen’s Bank Holiday Records. In 2018, she signed with Polydor Records and released her second EP, “Lately,” in 2019. Her unique blend of British soul, alternative R&B, jazz, and neo-soul garnered significant industry recognition. In 2019, she was named the winner of the BBC’s Sound of 2020 poll and received the Rising Star Award at the Brit Awards.

Her debut album, “Not Your Muse,” released in 2021, reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album earned her nominations for Album of the Year, Best Female Solo Artist, and Best New Artist at the 2021 Brit Awards, and was shortlisted for the 2021 Mercury Prize. Celeste also contributed to the soundtrack for “The Trial of the Chicago 7” (2020) with her song “Hear My Voice,” which received nominations for Best Original Song at both the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe Awards. Her song “A Little Love” was featured in the 2020 John Lewis & Partners Christmas advert, further expanding her reach.
