About

Cortex is a French jazz-funk band founded in 1974 by pianist and composer Alain Mion and drummer Alain Gandolfi. The band initially formed after Mion responded to an advertisement from a guitarist and bassist seeking musicians at the Centre Américain in Paris. This collaboration led to the quick formation of the group, which also included singer Mireille Dalbray, alto saxophonist Alain Labib, and bassist Jean Grevet. Cortex became recognized for its blending of funk, bossa nova, samba-jazz, and psychedelic rock grooves, characterized by complex polyrhythmic instrumentals and atmospheric vocals.

A significant milestone for Cortex was the recording of their album “Troupeau Bleu,” which took place over two days, July 15-16, 1975, at Studio Damiens in Boulogne-Billancourt, France. Mireille Dalbray featured prominently on nearly all tracks of this influential album. Though the band initially disbanded in 1981, their unique sound gained renewed interest in the early 2000s due to extensive sampling by prominent hip-hop artists. This re-engagement with their music led to a reformation in 2009, with Mion continuing to lead a rotating group of musicians, including Virginie Hombel on vocals, Loïc Soulat on keyboard and alto sax, Mohamed Ouaraz on bass, and Victor Dubois on drums.

Cortex has performed at various venues and festivals globally since their reunion. Notable performances include appearances at New Morning, Monaco’s Note Bleue, The Jazz Cafe, and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Winners Festival in Europe. In 2022, Cortex toured the U.S., with stops at The Music Hall of Williamsburg in NYC, LODGE Room in Los Angeles, and the Desert Daze festival in California. In June 2024, they embarked on a North American summer tour, “Jazz is Dead,” playing at venues such as Damrosch Park at Lincoln Center in New York, NY, Howard Theatre in D.C., Revolution Hall in Portland, OR, and the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Their discography includes several LPs like “Troupeau Bleu,” “Vol. 2,” “Pourquoi,” “Inédit ’79,” and “Rare and Lost Tapes.”
