Devon Gilfillian is an accomplished American soul singer-songwriter based in Nashville, Tennessee. His musical journey began at the age of 14 when he started playing guitar and formed a band called Black Sheep during high school. After earning a degree in psychology from West Chester University, he continued to hone his craft by performing in various cover bands, including Hot Spoon Gilly, which laid the foundation for his future in music.
In 2013, Gilfillian relocated to Nashville, where he joined a local blues cover band, marking the beginning of his professional career. His debut self-titled EP, released in 2016, showcased his gospel-inspired blues-rock style and set the stage for his major label debut. In January 2020, he released his first full-length album, “Black Hole Rainbow,” which received a Grammy nomination for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The album’s singles, including “Unchained” and “The Good Life,” achieved significant success on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart.
In addition to his studio work, Gilfillian has made notable contributions to social causes through music. In 2020, he released a track-by-track cover of Marvin Gaye’s iconic album “What’s Going On,” donating all profits to Tennessee’s Equity Alliance Fund. This project not only highlighted his artistic talent but also his commitment to social justice, particularly in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
Most recently, in April 2023, Gilfillian released his second studio album, “Love You Anyway,” which features the hit single “All I Really Wanna Do.” He has performed at prestigious events such as the Newport Folk Festival and has opened for renowned artists like Mavis Staples and Grace Potter. With a growing discography and a passion for both music and activism, Devon Gilfillian continues to make a significant impact in the music industry and beyond.
