About

Born on May 4, 1961, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Donald Lawrence emerged as a prominent figure in gospel music, later studying at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in music. His career began gaining momentum with his involvement as a vocal coach for the R&B group En Vogue and as the musical director for Stephanie Mills. These early experiences established his diverse musical foundation and showcased his capabilities beyond traditional gospel. He later became known for his Grammy-nominated songs “The Blessing of Abraham” and “Encourage Yourself,” which solidified his reputation as a gifted artist and producer within the gospel genre.

Lawrence’s early career saw him taking on the role of musical director for The Tri-City Singers, a group named after Spartanburg, SC, Gastonia, NC, and Charlotte, NC. The group debuted in 1993 with “A Songwriter’s Point Of View” on GospoCentric Records, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Top Gospel Charts. Their 1995 follow-up, “Bible Stories,” topped these charts and was the first to be billed as Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers. This album was released on Lawrence’s own label, Crystal Rose Records, distributed through Sparrow Records. In 1997, he notably produced Karen Clark Sheard’s Grammy-nominated debut, “Finally Karen,” further demonstrating his producing acumen and collaborative spirit.

His career progression continued with a signing to EMI Gospel in 2000, leading to the album “tri-city4.com,” which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Charts. Further albums like “Go Get Your Life Back” (2002) and solo effort “I Speak Life” (2004) under his Quiet Water Entertainment sublabel cemented his status. “I Speak Life” garnered 7 Stellar Award nominations and 6 wins. The Tri-City Singers officially retired in 2006 after releasing “Finale: Act One” and “Finale: Act Two,” with the lead single “The Blessing Of Abraham” earning a Grammy nomination. Lawrence continued to release solo projects, including “The Law of Confession Part I” (2009) and “YRM (Your Righteous Mind)” (2011). His 2019 project, “Goshen,” with The Tri-City Singers, earned a Grammy nomination and five Stellar Awards, including Song Of The Year for “Deliver Me. This Is My Exodus,” which also topped the Billboard Gospel charts.
