Iliass Mansouri, known professionally as Dystinct, was born on September 9, 1998, in Mortsel, Belgium, to a Moroccan family. Growing up in Antwerp, he was exposed to a diverse range of global music through his parents. His father, a singer in Darija, inspired Dystinct’s early musical aspirations. Despite initial shyness and parental expectations for a career in engineering or medicine, Dystinct pursued his passion for music. He began by teaching himself beat production and uploading R&B covers to YouTube under an alias, eventually sharing them publicly at a friend’s encouragement. His first public performance took place at age 16 in Brussels. He signed his first contract with Avalon Music at eighteen, leading him to move to Amsterdam and begin collaborating with Dutch artists.
Dystinct released his first two singles, “Panamera” and “No Ring Ring,” in 2017, both in Dutch. His goal was to introduce Moroccan culture and Darija to a wider audience, gradually incorporating Darija words into his music. His first solo song entirely in Darija, “Ya La Laa,” marked a turning point, propelling him to a new level of fame within the Moroccan community. His debut album, “Mon Voyage,” released in 2021, featured collaborations with artists like 3robi, Chawki, and Tawsen, and became the best-selling album in Morocco in 2021. This journey established him as a significant artist in the SWANA region and its diaspora.
A pivotal moment arrived in 2022 with the release of “Ghazali” (feat. Bryan Mg), a song he initially hesitated to release. This track gained unexpected widespread attention when it became the victory anthem for Morocco’s national football team during their 2022 FIFA World Cup run. “Ghazali” amassed over 57 million streams on Spotify and 91 million views on YouTube, cementing his international breakthrough. His second album, “LAYALI,” released in 2023, continued this success, featuring collaborators like MHD and Naza. The lead single “Tek Tek” (feat. MHD) went viral on TikTok, and in 2023, he won the Trace Awards for Best North African Artist. In 2024, Dystinct performed “Ghazali” and “Tek Tek” at the CAF Awards in Marrakech, and his upcoming 2025 tour, “BABA,” includes dates in North Africa, Europe, and North America.
