Earth

Earth is an American rock band, founded in 1989 in Olympia, Washington, by guitarist Dylan Carlson. Initially, the band’s focus was on heavily distorted guitar drones and extended minimalist song structures. Their 1993 debut album, “Earth 2,” became a foundational work in the drone metal genre. Carlson, the band’s constant member, was influenced by minimalist composers like La Monte Young and bands such as King Crimson and Slayer. The band faced a hiatus between 1997 and 2003 due to Carlson’s personal challenges, including heroin addiction, which he openly discussed as the primary reason for the break.

Earth re-emerged in the early 2000s with a changed sound, though still slow-paced and drone-based. The band introduced a drummer and incorporated country, jazz rock, and folk elements into their music from 2005 onwards. This evolution is evident in albums like “Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method” (2005), which drew from country guitarists and visionary composers such as Ennio Morricone. Subsequent releases, “The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull” (2008) and “Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light I” (2011), further explored influences from 1960s and 1970s San Francisco bands, jazz-rock, and British Folk-Rock.

Throughout its career, Earth has released numerous studio albums, EPs, and live recordings, collaborating with various artists and changing lineups while Carlson remained the core creative force. The band’s discography showcases a consistent evolution, moving from the foundational drone metal sound to a blend of genres that highlights Carlson’s explorative approach to guitar music. Their work has been released through labels such as Sub Pop, Southern Lord, and Sargent House.
