Elephant Revival formed in 2006 in Nederland, Colorado, a small mountain town that helped shape the band’s close-knit, community-rooted approach to making music. From the start, the group operated as a true collective: every member is a multi-instrumentalist who contributes vocals and songwriting. Today the lineup consists of Bonnie Paine, Bridget Law, Dango Rose, and Darren Garvey, with Sage Cook and Daniel Rodriguez among those who previously performed in the band.
The band describes its sound as “transcendental folk,” a label reflecting music that crosses categories, weaving together Scottish/Celtic fiddle tunes, original folk pieces, traditional ballads, bluegrass, and indie rock. Since releasing their self-titled debut, “Elephant Revival,” in 2008, they have built a catalog spanning “Break In The Clouds” (2010), the “It’s Alive” EP (2012), “These Changing Skies” (2013), the live “Sands of Now” CD and DVD set recorded at the Boulder Theater (2015), and “Petals” (2016).
Their reputation as live performers has carried them onto bills with a wide range of artists, including Dispatch, Bela Fleck, John Paul Jones, Devotchka, Michael Franti, Little Feat, Yonder Mountain String Band, Nickel Creek, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth, State Radio, String Cheese Incident, and Trampled by Turtles. They are also regular performers at WinterWonderGrass, the bluegrass and roots festival held at ski resorts in Steamboat Springs, Colorado; Olympic Valley, California; and Manchester, Vermont.
With more than fifteen years of recording and touring behind them, Elephant Revival remains a fixture of the American folk scene, and their influence shows up in comparisons drawn to Colorado contemporaries by critics and fellow musicians alike.
