Jessy J’s critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Tequila Moon’ (2008), launched her career with its title track reaching number one on the Billboard Jazz chart, quickly establishing her as a formidable force in contemporary jazz. This immediate success was followed by her song ‘Tropical Rain’ (2009), which achieved top positions on both the Groove Jazz Music and Billboard Jazz charts. Her impact was quickly recognized as she was named ‘Debut Artist of the Year’ by Radio & Records in 2008 and received the ‘Contemporary Jazz Song of the Year’ award for ‘Tequila Moon’ from Radio & Records and Billboard that same year. Jessy J’s profile continued to rise, earning her prominent cover features in Jazziz Magazine (May 2008), Saxophone Journal (October 2009), and Latina Style Magazine (October 2009).
She earned a scholarship to the University of Southern California (USC), where she pursued a degree in jazz studies and was recognized as the ‘Most Outstanding Jazz Student.’ From a young age, her talent was evident; by 15, she won the Piano State Championship at the Béla Bartók Festival. She further distinguished herself by playing saxophone in prestigious ensembles such as the Grammy Band, performing at international events including the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
