Adedamola Oyinlola Adefolahan, known professionally as Fireboy DML, was born on February 5, 1996, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria. His musical journey began early, as he was a member of his church choir. While attending Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in English, his interest in music solidified. Following his graduation, he moved to Lagos to pursue a full-time career in music. In 2018, Fireboy DML signed a record deal with YBNL Nation, a prominent record label founded by rapper Olamide, marking a significant step in his career.
His breakthrough moment arrived with the single “Jealous,” which first appeared on YBNL Nation’s collaborative album, ‘YBNL Mafia Family’ (2018), and was re-released in March 2019. The track, characterized by its blend of guitar riffs, traditional drums, and African harmonies with country and soul elements, helped establish his unique “Afro-Life” sound. This success led to the release of his debut studio album, ‘Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps,’ in November 2019. The album received positive reviews and quickly accumulated over 6 million streams on Spotify within three days of its release. He continued his prolific output with his sophomore album, ‘Apollo,’ in 2020, which garnered an 8.3 rating from Pitchfork, praising it as “the peak of his vision so far.”
Fireboy DML’s career has been marked by significant collaborations and global reach. His 2021 single “Peru” further elevated his international profile, especially after a remix featuring Ed Sheeran in December 2021. This collaboration debuted at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and peaked at number 2 on the UK Official Singles Chart in 2022, eventually becoming RIAA-certified platinum. He has collaborated with artists like Madonna and Justin Timberlake, with his song “Coming Back For You” being included in the ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ soundtrack in 2022. His consistent success in music and ability to cross into international markets demonstrate his development as a leading artist in the Afrobeats genre.
