Furthur, founded by former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, delivered improvisational rock performances from 2009 to 2014, continuing the legacy of psychedelic and roots rock music. After their debut performances in September 2009 at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California, Furthur, founded by Grateful Dead members Bob Weir (rhythm guitar, lead vocals) and Phil Lesh (bass guitar, lead vocals), quickly established a commanding presence in the improvisational rock scene. The initial lineup also featured John Kadlecik of Dark Star Orchestra on lead guitar, Jeff Chimenti of RatDog on keyboards, and Joe Russo of the Benevento/Russo Duo on drums. Drawing inspiration from Ken Kesey’s famous psychedelic bus, the band aimed to maintain a fresh and improvisational approach, primarily focusing on performing music from the extensive Grateful Dead catalog, alongside original material and covers from artists including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Bob Dylan.
Throughout their tenure, Furthur successfully maintained the legacy of psychedelic and roots rock music, captivating audiences with their fresh and spontaneous live shows.
