Gente de Zona has achieved global recognition for their fusion of reggaeton with traditional Cuban rhythms, earning numerous awards and collaborating with international artists. After releasing their hit single ‘Pa’ la Gente de Mi Zona’ in 2005, Gente de Zona established themselves as innovators in Latin music. Co-founded by Alexander Delgado, the group initially focused on hip-hop. Following an early personnel change in 2005, Delgado recruited Yosdany ‘Jacob Forever’ Carmenates and Fernando ‘Nando Pro’ Otero, pivoting the groups musical direction towards reggaeton.
This evolution, integrating traditional Cuban genres like son and mambo, garnered widespread appeal. In 2007, Gente de Zona signed with Planet Records, releasing their sophomore album, ‘Lo Mejor Que Suena Ahora’. Over the subsequent years, Gente de Zona consistently delivered chart-topping music with albums like ‘A Full’ (2010) and ‘Oro: Lo Nuevo y lo Mejor’ (2012). Numerous singles, including ‘El Animal,’ topped Cuban charts.
Their critically acclaimed 2016 album, ‘Visualízate,’ featured collaborations with superstars like Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez, garnering extensive industry recognition. Gente de Zona secured Latin American Music Awards in 2015, followed by a 2016 Latin Grammy for Best Tropical Fusion Album (‘Visualízate’) and a Premios Juventud for ‘La Combinación Perfecta’ (‘La Gozadera’). Their sustained excellence led to multiple Premio Lo Nuestro and Billboard Latin Music Awards in 2017, including Album of the Year. In 2018, Gente de Zona premiered their HBO Latino special ‘En Letra de Otro’ and released ‘Te Duele,’ an official Zumba theme song.
Most recently, in 2021, the group earned two Latin Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Urban Song for ‘Patria y Vida’.
