Geordie Wade Greep was born on August 20, 1999, in Walthamstow, London. Early in his life, he developed an interest in music, influenced by his father’s diverse record collection and his experiences playing gospel music in churches. This early exposure fostered a unique musical perspective, emphasizing improvisation and a wide range of genres, from progressive rock and classical music to jazz. His guitar journey began at age seven with the video game ‘Guitar Hero,’ leading to an electric guitar at eight and an immersion in artists like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, and Miles Davis.
Greep’s professional career began to take shape during his time at the BRIT School, where he met Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, Cameron Picton, and Morgan Simpson, forming Black Midi. The band gained recognition performing at The Windmill in Brixton, which led to a partnership with Rough Trade Records in 2019. Under this label, Black Midi released three critically acclaimed albums: ‘Schlagenheim’ (2019), ‘Cavalcade’ (2021), and ‘Hellfire’ (2022). ‘Schlagenheim’ was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2019, and ‘Hellfire’ marked their highest-charting album to date and their first to chart in the US. These albums showcased Greep’s distinctive vocal style and dramatic narrative songwriting, characterized by introspective lyrics and varied musical influences like Argentine tango and cartoon scores.
Following Black Midi’s indefinite hiatus in 2024, Greep embarked on a solo career. He released his debut solo album, ‘The New Sound,’ on October 4, 2024, through Rough Trade Records. The album was met with very positive reviews from music publications such as Pitchfork. Collaborating with Seth ‘Shank’ Evans (HMLTD), ‘The New Sound’ explored themes of desperation within a musical framework incorporating experimental rock, math rock, jazz fusion, and art rock. Greep continues to tour his solo material, with a ‘Live in the USA Tour’ planned for September 2025 and a performance at the Balaclava Fest in November 2025.
