George Benson is an acclaimed American jazz fusion guitarist, singer, and songwriter known for his successful solo career and transition between jazz, pop, and R&B. After gaining widespread recognition with his groundbreaking 1976 album ‘Breezin”, George Benson went on to achieve triple-platinum status, becoming the first jazz record to do so, and earned a Grammy Award for Record of the Year for the album’s featured vocal track, ‘This Masquerade’ in 1977. Benson released his earliest recordings, ‘She Makes Me Mad’ and ‘It Should Have Been Me,’ for RCA Victor’s Groove Records. Initially focusing on vocals, he honed his distinctive guitar style playing with organist Jack McDuff, before releasing his debut album as a leader, ‘The New Boss Guitar of George Benson,’ featuring McDuff, in 1964, alongside ‘It’s Uptown’ (1966) and ‘The George Benson Cookbook’ (1967) with the George Benson Quartet.
His career, marked by the seamless integration of guitar virtuosity and distinctive vocal talents, has earned him ten Grammy Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Most recently, Benson released ‘Dreams Do Come True: When George Benson Meets Robert Farnon’ in 2024, further solidifying his legacy as an iconic figure in jazz, pop, and R&B.
