George Ezra Barnett, born on June 7, 1993, in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England, developed an early interest in music, drawing inspiration from artists like Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie. After attending primary school in Bengeo and Simon Balle School, he pursued formal music education, moving to Bristol in 2011 to study songwriting at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute. His distinctive deep vocals quickly gained attention, a style he cultivated by emulating blues legends like Lead Belly. Ezra’s career began to solidify with early performances and the release of his debut EP, “Did You Hear the Rain?” in October 2013, followed by “Cassy O'” in March 2014. These early releases garnered airplay on BBC Radio 1 and secured him positions on various “ones to watch” lists for 2014, including MTV’s Brand New and iTunes’ new artists. He also supported notable artists such as Lianne La Havas, Bastille, Sam Smith, and Tom Odell, building a foundation for his subsequent breakthrough.
Ezra’s debut studio album, “Wanted on Voyage,” released in June 2014, marked a significant milestone, catapulting him to international recognition. The album featured the hit single “Budapest,” which achieved number one status in several countries and was certified platinum by the Federation of the Italian Music Industry. “Wanted on Voyage” topped the UK Albums Chart and became the third-best-selling album of 2014 in the UK. His second album, “Staying at Tamara’s,” released in March 2018, continued this success, also reaching number one in the UK. This album included the singles “Paradise” and “Shotgun,” with “Shotgun” becoming Ezra’s first number-one single in the UK, Ireland, and Australia. In February 2019, he received the Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist. His third album, “Gold Rush Kid,” released in June 2022, continued his streak of UK number one albums, solidifying his position in the music industry.
Beyond his musical releases, Ezra has engaged in various projects, including his podcast “George Ezra & Friends,” launched in February 2018, where he discusses music with fellow artists. He also made an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in March 2015 and performed at the Platinum Party at the Palace in June 2022 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. His career progression has been marked by consistent chart success, multiple awards, and a growing presence across different entertainment platforms. In 2022, he also released a documentary titled “End to End,” chronicling a journey from Land’s End to John o’ Groats.
