About

Jeanie Lee Hang-ngai, professionally known as Gin Lee, was born on August 26, 1987, in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, into a family with a strong musical background; her father was a professional drummer and her mother a live singer. She began singing publicly at a young age and pursued her passion by graduating from the International College of Music (ICOM) in Malaysia with a bachelor’s degree in vocal music and arrangement. Her early career started in 2009 with the release of her debut Mandarin album, “ONE & ONLY,” where she also contributed to most of the songwriting. This album earned a nomination at the 17th Malaysian Music Industry Awards for Best Local Chinese Album.

Lee’s career gained significant momentum when she participated in various singing competitions. In May 2010, she appeared on Taiwan’s “Super Idol,” and in August of the same year, she competed in Hong Kong’s “The Voice 2.” Her performance of “Xin Bu Liao Qing / New Everlasting Love” impressed judges, notably earning a perfect score from veteran singer Teresa Carpio. The exposure from these competitions led her to relocate to Hong Kong in 2011, where she released her Cantonese debut EP, “Here I Come,” under BMA Records. Her single “Returning Home Alone Today” (今天終於一人回家) became a major hit in 2012, topping charts and securing two awards at the Hong Kong Metro Radio Hit Music Awards. In 2013, she was honored as the Best Performance Artiste of Malaysia at the 13th Global Chinese Music Awards.

A pivotal turning point occurred in 2015 when Lee joined “The Voice of China (season 4),” where she was mentored by Jay Chou and placed ninth overall. Following this, she signed with Universal Music (Hong Kong) in December 2014, a move publicly announced in January 2016. Her 2016 album, “beGin,” was a commercial success, topping the Hong Kong Record Merchants Association (HKRMA) sales chart for four weeks and receiving platinum certification from the Hong Kong Recording Industry Alliance (HKRIA). Singles from “beGin” achieved 61 number ones on music charts. Her follow-up, the live-recorded concept album “Live in the Moment” (2017), also saw considerable success, reaching gold certification within two months and topping HKRMA sales charts for four consecutive weeks. In 2023, she joined Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) and released the hit track “Dum Dum,” which topped all five major charts in Hong Kong.
